Four Steps to a No-Fuss Skin Care Routine for Teenagers

Becoming a teenager isn’t easy.
A whole lot of changes come through at once;
affecting how the body works, how we look and how we feel.
It turns life upside down – sometimes in both good and bad ways.

The most telling sign of this ‘coming of age’ and internal turbulence shows itself in our skin. Back in the ‘good, old days’ of of being a pre-teen, we were usually lucky enough to get away without a blemish. But puberty brings about signature spots as time passes, and it’s only natural to see these hormonal changes pop up every now and then; it’s all apart of making the beautiful transition from girlhood to womanhood! And it’s actually very exciting.

With the right skincare routine for teens in hand, all of those spots and dots – from acne to blemishes and beyond – can be easily managed. Let’s walk through the why, the what, and the how...

~

Why do teens experience bad skin during puberty?

Your skin is the largest organ in the body. The internal workings of all other organs and systems often show themselves through your complexion. Think of it like a “you are what you eat” kind of situation.

When hormones start to kick in around puberty, chaos starts stirring. Like a rocket being activated before takeoff, the inner fire can erupt as acne, oiliness, blotchiness, or changes to your skin’s look and feel.

These changes disrupt the outward zen of your skin. Zits come up, often caused by impurities and bacteria that become trapped under oily environments which your hormones have helped create. But don’t worry, all of this comes and goes – it’s never forever.

It’s difficult to predict how their body will take the changes of teenagehood. While we specialise in online fashion for teens, we’re keen to share a few things that you can do to help your teenage girl embrace puberty’s unexpected mysteries as they come and go – starting with maintaining an optimal skin routine!

How to keep teenage oily skin under control?

First things first; cleanliness is next to godliness. That means making sure your face is clean, balanced, and well taken care of with the right skincare products suited for teen skin.

There are a few items that will help you get great results in your day-to-day. These essentials include:

        • Cleanser
        • Toner
        • Moisturiser
        • A good sunscreen (SPF 30+ at least)

Cleanse your way to clarity

Unfortunately, there’s never a one-size-fits-all when it comes to teenage skincare. Almost every teen will feel the urge to clean their skin when changes start coming through. After all, when your face is feeling greasy and gross, it’s tempting to want to scrub it clean.

At first glance, it’s common to reach for products that are high-strength cleansers - but they often overdo it. Even if skin appears to be shiny and oily, some of that oil needs to stick around to form a protective barrier. Stripping it away means acne may just become even more apparent, and we know that is what you’re looking to avoid.

Our bodies are intelligent; it knows when oil is missing and tries to compensate by generating more of it. Because of this, it’s a good idea to be gentle with your cleansing regime at all times, and that includes teaching your teens how to adopt the correct approach. They may find that washing their face twice a day with something even as mild as soap could work enough, meanwhile, a gentle Micellar water could do the trick. It’s a trial and error process – but the key is to keep it up regularly.

Be toned and balanced

Next up is toning up. Think back to chemistry class, where you learned about the pH scale. The pH level of a pre-teen complexion changes during puberty, just as the body and mood do. When that happens, a whole new environment for microbes is formed, which can cause breakouts and dullness.

To avoid causing havoc, follow a cleanser up with a toner, which will help prevent this from happening. The formula is made in a way that maintains the right not-too-acidic, not-too-basic balance, which gives the skin the best chance of flourishing.

Moisturising matters

A moisturiser is the next must-do. Don't worry – a good product won’t make the skin greasy or break out. It’ll actually help the skin to stay hydrated and “trick” it into producing less oil.

Be sun smart

Lastly, protecting the skin from the sun is a must. It’s also the best anti-ageing weapon in the beauty world. It shields your skin from nasty UV and sun rays that can wreak so much havoc, so it’s always worth having some sunscreen on hand.

Learning how to use the right teen skincare products is our top tip for looking and feeling youthful for years to come, even as your teen migrates through puberty and goes through all those unwanted times of blemishes and teen-like spots – it’s all a part of growing up!

"Do I have to have salad?"

The question I am asked nearly every dinner time.

I'm not sure why they bother because the answer is always a resounding "YES!" but I guess they can always live in hope.

Salad. It's the one thing that can cause a major battle at the dinner table in most households with toddlers and teens (and maybe even husbands)! So when I came across a business that made salad look sexy and so delicious, and then discovered that they also families with kids, I knew I had to ask them how salad consumption at their mealtimes rated.
